PBS History
In 2013 the collective group of pilots over the years had ammassed a collection of 90 bikes which was stored? in the current Bike Storage Room on the rooftop at our LAX Crew Hotel. The vast majority of these bikes were old, damaged and unusable.
The storage room itself was unusable and unsafe due to uber over-crowding, with bikes tied to the roof sprinkler systems etc. The new GM of the Hotel advised AirNZ that the storage room was no longer available to AirNZ and that all the 'goods' had to be removed forthwith.
Neither the Fleet Management or the Union Groups were prepared to deal with the issue - so with the support of the B777 Fleet Manager Capt Dave Allard, the three of us gained authority to negotiate a resolution with the hotel that would benefit ALL pilots.
The basis of this was to initially remove all the exsiting bikes of which approx 70 were given to a worthwhile LA Bike Charity with the remainder being returned by their owners to NZ. This was achieved by communication to all pilots, with the use of surveys etc, concurrent with a plan to establish a subscription based PBS to provide new bikes which would be regularly maintained and replaced every two to three years.
The establishment of the PBS and initial purchase of the bikes was supported by Capt's David Morgan and Dave Wilson with a equal $ for $ contribution based on the Pilots initial annual subscription.
